Bird Model: Common Kingfisher

This listing is for one Common Kingfisher bird model. It is made of stoneware ceramic, nichrome wire (kiln wire) and glazed with various colours of underglaze as well as clear glaze. As you can see it is a very delicate item, so it should be treated care!

The Common Kingfisher is such a fascinating bird! I first saw this wonderous creature on my birthday (what a gift!) while staying at an Onsen in Kawazu, Japan. It is so super fast that you can barely see it (just a flash of teal blue and orange) until it lands! This bird really sparked an interest in all kinds of kingfishers for me, so it holds a very special place in my heart. This little bird model, I think, captures the common kingfisher spirit quite well!

You may notice there are 2 little wire dots on the bottom of the base of the bird and that is because the way I glaze fire the birds is by inserting a wire hook into the base (the lump of clay the bird is standing on) and hang it upside down in the kiln (on a rig) so that it keeps the bird nice and straight while firing. Then after firing is complete I cut off that wire loop from the bottom of the bird model!

note: this is a handmade product and like any handmade product small imperfections and variations are a normal part of the process/final product!
