I first saw this wonderous creature on my birthday (what a gift!) while staying at an Onsen in Kawazu, Japan. It is so super fast that you can barely see it (just a flash of teal blue and orange) until it lands! This bird really sparked an interest in all kinds of kingfishers for me, so it holds a very special place in my heart. This little bird model, I think, captures the common kingfisher spirit quite well!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eYou may notice there are 2 little wire dots on the bottom of the base of the bird and that is because the way I glaze fire the birds is by inserting a wire hook into the base (the lump of clay the bird is standing on) and hang it upside down in the kiln (on a rig) so that it keeps the bird nice and straight while firing. It makes a loud rattling sound so you can definitely hear it coming before you can see it. There are a couple that live (at least for the season) at a storm pond near my home. They are often just perched on the branch of a dead tree. I love how they patiently sit on the branch and wait for their opportunity to strike an unsuspecting fish. There is a pair that was living primarily at a pond near my home and they were probably the calmest Herons I've ever seen, they were just hanging out in the trees that overhang the pond! They really didn't get spooked by much at all.
